My Period Panties Experience
UPDATE Jan 2023: Thinx period panties have recently been found to contain potentially harmful chemicals. Since learning this, I’ve personally decided to stop using their products. Instead, I’ve been researching alternatives! Click here for deeper insight into the potential chemicals involved with period panties, and to see some safer, non toxic period panty options.
I’m always looking for small ways in my lifestyle where I can be more sustainable. For me, it started with using reusable cotton pads to remove my makeup, and now, period panties! I first saw them when I was scrolling on Aerie (where I buy all my underwear) and I bought them out of curiosity. Here’s what I’ve learned since…
Will I feel wet?
I think the biggest hesitation people have when considering period panties is how absorbent they are — I found them to be super absorbent, and on top of that I didn’t feel like I was walking around “wet” which I know is something that people who prefer tampons might be skeptical about. I found them to be much more comfortable than pads and super easy to maintain. All I had to do was throw them in the wash and I was good to go.
How absorbent are they?
There many different types of period underwear that offer different absorbency levels. I love the Thinx Cotton Boyshorts because they hold 5 tampons worth! I’m so impressed by how much these babies can absorb and keep you covered. They’re also SUPER comfortable to wear. For reference, I wear a size small.
Where should I start?
The ArieREAL Period Underwear was the first type of period panties I ever tried, and it was a great place to start as they are super affordable. I was blown away by the concept and ease of use! After much success I decided to try out another period panty brand that came across my FYP on TikTok called Thinx. They have a wide variety to choose from, and have become my absolute top favorite!
When should I wear them?
The Thinx Cotton Boyshorts are beyond comfortable and perfect to wear around the house, for overnight, or if you just want to throw on some sweats. I’ve found that they even wear seamlessly under denim! The Thinx Super Cotton Brief is also great for everyday wear, and comes in various absorbencies to suit your flow.
Are they noticeable?
You don’t have to worry about if your pad is bulky and showing. Period panties come in a range of styles and can be as discreet as you’d like. The cotton material is also super breathable and comfortable to wear.
My last cycle, I only used 2 tampons (mainly for the gym). The rest of the time I used my period panties! It’s amazing to think about how much waste we can reduce just by limiting our use of disposable period products. I know I feel like I can make a difference for years to come by reducing my waste in this way each month AND I LOVE THAT. I plan to buy new pairs every 2 years (as recommended on the Thinx site) to keep them fresh and working well.
